Well the final preparations have begun! PAG's Business Innovation team invites you to support PAG in raising funds for Lize-Mari Geelhuizen. This is her story:
Lize-Mari is 13 years old and has a rare cancer tumour, a Chordoma Tumour, situated in her brain. She was diagnosed in 2004 and underwent brain surgery the same year to remove part of the tumour. She then had 10 radiation treatments over a period of 10 weeks and had surgery performed on her eyes to correct her vision. Her tumour was in remission for 3 years. She now has recurrent symptoms and the tumour has grown again. Because the tumour is very close to the brainstem, normal radiation is impossible to perform. The option of surgery has also been ruled out because of the location of the tumour. Proton Therapy has been recommended as the only treatment suitbale for this type of tumour. Lize-Mari requires 30 to 35 sessions of Proton Therapy and she has been accepted at a Proton Therapy facility in Orsay, Paris. Proton Therapy has proved to be very successful in this type of tumour and several children are cancer-free because of it.
The Geelhuizen Family plan to travel to France before the end of 2009 and are desperately trying to raise enough funds for the required 3 month stay. Please help PAG assist this family by sponsoring our cycle from Cape Town to Johannesburg from 11th December to 24th December 2009.
